From Scott:

Hello and welcome.

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Scott Clawson. I am a retired manager from United Parcel Service. I live in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. Married to a lovely lady and have 2 daughters, 4 grandkids, 2 cats and 1 dog.

A few years back after retiring from UPS I found this wonderful program called MSTS. What fun. I started slow and after awhile found myself falling into the abyss. First there was only the six default routes, then came my first pay ware route. HOOKED! Had to have them all. My wife said that I was obsessed. True.

I tried my hand at route building. Couldn't do it. I have the greatest respect for route builders. It's hard work. It takes time and even if their finished product is less than stellar, they have my appreciation and thanks.

I joined a few Virtual Railroads. NERR, OVS, P&A, GL&A and CNW. I also started to create some activities for a few of these also. I wrote some early acts and posted them to Train Sim. Had a nice response. After a while some  folks asked me to start writing acts for them. I did that and decided to come up with a name. CATS was born. Kind of corny don't you think. Oh well its fun.

I decided to start writing acts and placing them on Train Sim. So here we are.

I use the latest stable version of Bin. I also know that MSTS does some strange things. My acts work on my machines. I trust they will work on yours. If you have any thoughts or suggestions for acts you would like to see, please drop me a line. My father and grandfather taught me that respect for each other is proper. Please be respectful if you contact me as I will  be respectful of you. I have made some wonderful friends from all over the world through MSTS; I look forward to meeting many more.

My best,

Scott Clawson

Following is from Bruce's readme file:

Activity for the delightful San Diego & Arizona Shortline, through the Carriso Gorge.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This activity sees you departing El Centro, in the lush and fertile Imperial Valley to the east of San Diego, on a balmy summer day at 7:30 AM. Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to take your train of perishable fruit and vegetables through to San Diego. However, in reality, as the line terminates just past Campo you'll be hard pressed to make San Diego! Therefore the scenario ends just westward of Campo.

NOTE! Yes, I realise that any foodstuffs intended for the San Diego market would probably leave El Centro either late at night or very early in the morning. But to set the starting time in the hours of darkness would not allow you to enjoy the visual splendours of the Carriso Gorge line.

You have at your disposal an SD40-2 unit at the head end, hauling ten refrigerated cars. En-route you'll be picking up a boxcar at Plaster City.

The trip should take around three hours to complete.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE! ALL rolling stock and loco power is default equipment IF you have updated your Train Simulator nstallation to the latest version. This is the one which includes the SD40-2 loco and the additional freight cars, one of which is the "US2FREIGHTREFRIGE".

Because I have used default equipment - in an attempt to make it somewhat easier for those who only run default equipment, or who don't have a large range of third-party equipment - the fact that BNSF-liveried stock is running on an SP line is a bit out-of-whack! However, those who are even basically familiar with the Activity Editor and with creating/modifying consists will be able to replace the default units with something more appropriate.

I originally created the player's consist using the 3DTrainsStuff Southern Pacific GP20, as is included with the Cajon Pass package. This is a great little loco to run on this route and if you decide to follow suit, a word of caution: The Geep is lower-powered than the SD40-2 and you will need several of these little units to haul an equivalent consist.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have run this route several times, fine-tuning things like reversing points. The last proving run went without any problems at all, other than a red light facing me at the extreme western end of Campo. A simple tap on the [Tab] key fixed that but, because there are no more signals beyond that point, don't be alarmed by their absence in the [F4] monitor!

If you experience any dramas, let me know via brucek@cyberone.com.au and I'll do what I can to help.

I hope you enjoy this little exercise in shortline operations and that you absorb the wonderful ambience of the Carriso Gorge route and all that it has to offer.

RouteRiter

Activity Packaging in Route Riter v4.0
3 May 2003

The activity packager supplied with MSTS does not work all the time. None of the experts on train-sim or uktrainsim have been able to figure out why it works sometimes and not others.

Mike Simpson has extended Route Riter v4.0 so that it can package all the needed files along with instructions for any activity you write. It automatically finds all the needed *.pat, *.srv, *.con, etc files and builds a ZIP file with paths enabling drag and drop installation.

Here is how to do it:

1. Create an installation readme file. Name it "Activity Name".txt and put it into route's activity directory (same place as the  "Acivity Name".act file. The text file's name MUST be exactly the same as the *.act file in order for RR to find it. For example, from my SD&A route:
    Hipass Meet.act
    Hipass Meet.txt

In this file you can put any text you want, author, instructions, credits, etc. RR will package it up into the activity ZIP file. See below for suggested user installation instructions.

Note: we don't call the readme, readme.txt, so that if you create multiple activities, the readme instructions don't get overwritten.

2. Start RR, confirm route and navigate to the route's ACTIVITY folder in the left window.

3. Click on the activity's *.act file.

4. Click on the "Activities/Stock" tab.

5. Click on "Check Selected Activity".

6. Fix any errors. Repeat the check as necessary until all errors are resolved.

7. Click "Package Activity". RR will create a ZIP file for you. It will ask you for the name and directory to put it in. RR will suggest a name which is the same as the activity name.

Note: One odd operation that I have observed on my Win98 system which Mike has not seen: RR creates a temporary directory during packaging named:

    "C:\Program Files\Route_Riter\SetupFiles\Train Simulator"

This directory MUST NOT be present when you press "Package Activity". Mike says on his computer RR deleted this directory. On my system it does not. SO before you package each activity, manually delete this directory if necessary.

8. Close the ZIP window by selecting File->Exit

9. Close the Activity Check report by clicking on the "Exit" button.

10. Exit RR

11. Distribute the ZIP file to world.

Here is a suggested user installation instructions. They should be put
into the "Activity Name".txt file as I described in step 1 above. You should
replace the names in quotes with the correct names for your route and
activity.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
This activity was packaged using Route Riter written by Mike Simpson.
In your ZIP program make sure "Use Folder Names" is selected.
If you are using WinZip, drag the ZIP file into the train simulator
folder: "c:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator".

This will install all the activity files into the correct directories.

Look at the Routes\"RouteName"\"Activity Name"_RollingStockNeeded.txt file.
This file lists all the rolling stock needed for the activity and the
name of the directory (in the Trains\Trainset directory) it should be
installed into.

Once you have all the rolling stock in place, you can run the activity.
