email from Jeremy Baker, Feb 2018: "Janet from Hills Chapel U.M.C and I both assume he is buried in Hill's Chapel Cemetery with no marker, unless he was buried on home farmland. I've done extensive research on his parents when they were last listed in the 1880 census in Lemley Township, Mecklenburg County. Half of the township is under water now. They built a dam in the 1950's to form what is now Lake Norman. Duke Power was responsible for the removal of all Cemeteries and remains. They had to file paperwork with the county and listed all names and where they were located to. I found a copy at the public library here in Charlotte. Unfortunately there were no Bakers listed at all."

email from Jeremy Baker, Apr 2019: "I have great news. I received my Y-DNA results a few days ago. Long story short, our Baker line goes back to Baltimore County,Maryland and from there back to England. I have a Y-DNA match with 29 others. One in particular reached out to me and their 3rd or 4th Great Grandfather is Levi Baker from Alexander County, NC.I'm working on a theory that Nathan's father is Nathan Baker from Iredell County and Nathan's uncle's are John & Isaac Baker. Levi is Isaac's son, which would make our Nathan that died Aft. 1883 cousins with Levi. I'm going to start my research in Maryland and work my way back down to North Carolina. I am also going to email all 29 Y-DNA matches and see if I can get any information from them as well."

From Bette Baker Clarno, Oct 2004:
Here's what I know about my grandmother, Agnes Franzenbach: She was born in 1865, I believe, in Coln, or as we call it, Cologne, Germany. ( There are two little dots, umlauts, over the O in Coln. I just don't know how to put them there ).Her father's name was Caspar Franzenbach. Her mother's name was Susanna Schmidt. There were 8 or 10 children in the family, and I think, well-to-do. I just base this on pictures I have of some of the family. In 1888, when she was 23, she married John Michel, or Michael.I think it was the former, in the Cathederal in Cologne. He had been in America on a ranch in Eastern Oregon, and had returned to Germany to find a bride. This is all according to Agnes' sister, Eva. I'm not sure if Agnes knew him before he came back to Germany. Anyway, she said she would go to America, but only if she could bring her younger sister, Eva, with her. Eva says that when they got to Oregon, the "ranch" was just an isolated spot and very primitive. John's brother and wife lived on it, too. The two sisters, who were used to the city and pretty nice living, I suspect, were horrified. I don't think they stayed very long. The sisters left and went to Pendleton, which was the nearest town to the ranch. There, my grandma found work in a bakery/grocery store owned and operated by Rudolph Martin...also German. They eventually married. I suspect Agnes never divorced John Michel. She was, up to then, a good Catholic. I would think that he, maybe, would have had the marriage annulled? My Grandpa, Rudolph Martin, was Lutheran.

Daniel Smith (I12) [Male] d. 1863
Mary Alice Smith's father was referred to as Daniel Smith who died during the Civil War in 1863. I do not think this Daniel Smith existed. Eliza's third daughter, born in 1871 is, in any case, from a different father. Information from the "The centennial history of Oregon, 1811-1912 : with notice of antecedent explorations" by Joseph Gaston, FHL 979.5 H2g v. and 979.5 H2g v.2: "Mrs. Miller is a daughter of Daniel and Eliza (Goens) Smith, both whom were natives of North Carolina, but of Pennsylvania Dutch extraction, the grandparents having moved from the Keystone state to North Carolina. The father is now deceased, having passed away in 1863..."

Family tree information from Jeremy Baker, Aug 2015 lists Daniel Smith born about 1843 in NC and died Jun 1870 in Sampson, NC. The information is unsourced.

Smith is mentioned in this marriage bond entry: Wiley Going was married to Anna Goldman January 26, 1839 in Lincoln County according to "North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868," record 1050, bondsman: Daniel Smith, witness: H. Cansler, Clerk of Court, bond 72692.

Name: Eliza Smith
Death Date: 6 Aug 1920
Death Place: Washington
Certificate: 168

1920 OR DC, 87y 7m, born NC. f: unknown, m: Lenard. reported by G. W. Miller.

Summary:My name is Mark DiVecchio. I am working on the genealogy for my wife and her brother. They both match you on Ancestry DNA. My wife is Sally Ann DiVecchio. Her brother is Robert H. Clarno, Jr.

You tree goes back to Christian Seabaugh 1749-1835. Their line goes back to Christian's brother, Jacob Seabaugh 1758-1809. And then back one more generation to their parents, Christopher Seabaugh 1725-1805 and Elizabeth Neighswonger 1720-1780.

From Jacob Seabaugh, their line goes:
Margaret Seabaugh 1801-1871 married Jacob Leonard 1798-1878
Ann Leonard 1817-1894 husband unknown but thought to be Aaron Goins 1816-1860
Eliza Mahaly Goins 1833-1920 husband unknown used the surname Smith her whole life
Laura Ann Smith 1861-1930 married Fielden Baker 1854-1897
Charles Lee Baker 1894-1952 married Frances Amelia Martin 1898-1963
and then, Sally and Rob's mother:
Betty Jane "Bette" Baker 1921-2007

I've found quite a few other matches with the Seabaugh and Leonard surnames.

One link is the line is still uncertain - - I have only circumstantual proof that Ann Leonard is the mother of Eliza Mahaly Goins.

Eliza (Goins) Smith was adopted by Polly Bollinger in 1837. I don't yet know for certain who Eliza's parents are but it is the subject of ongoing research. Family documents state that her father was Goins. Her death certificate states her mother's family name was "Lenard" probably Leonard. She was known her whole life from the adoption in 1837 until her death in 1920 as Eliza Smith. I believe that Daniel Smith never existed. Eliza's three daughters are from a yet unidentified man. Subject: Re: Cornelius' family

Hi Mark,
I just have the list of Cornelius's children, like you do. Although I was surprised to see that all the earlier ones were born in Oregon. However, in my vague memories of being with my grandma Laura Baker Young, there were other children about, too...no doubt Cornie's kids.
I wonder if Cornie and family and my Dad all moved to Tacoma about the same time?

No, I don't have any addresses or names of children, or anything.

Last winter Ruth Ann Bailey came south to Yuma after Christmas in their 5th Wheel. That year that they came to San Diego, they visited a nephew, but I don't know his name. I think Charlene said that they live in Canada.

Ruthann was four years old when Fay died, and Cornelius raised her...no doubt the sisters helped. I just didn't hear anything about the family after Dad and I married.....except one thing..Lois had some mental problems and spent some time in a Sanitorium (?).

I'll check through my e-mails from Charlene and see if there is anything there. I think her son, Troy, was doing some geneology, but I would imagine that it would have to do more with his Dad's family, the Nelsons. But let me check.

Later...Bette

"You and Herman" refers to his sister, Eva Franzenbach Foy and her husband, Herman Pratt. "Marshfield" is the old name for the downtown area of Coos Bay, Coos, OR. Bette Clarno wrote " I don't know when Bill's father died. I only heard about him when I was growing up in the 20's and 30's. He was known as "little Willie" in our family, because of his hump-back....well, also because he was the son of Willie Franzenbach, Sr., who was my Grandmother's brother. The story of how Willie and his wife , and horse and buggy, disappeared in Bandon, OR was lengendary in our family. Little Willie was left, and the story went on from there"

Written on the back of a photo by sister, Agnes : "I am Agnes Martin. This is my brother William Frazenbach. Somebody killed him in Medford for his money. He was a fine man."

Info from Bette Clarno, Jul 2007: I really don't know too much about her life with Herman Pratt. I do know that they lived in Fresno. They bought a little plot, probably 50 by 100, outside of Bakersfield, when it was thought there was oil there. It was willed to Carola by Aunt Eva, and to me by Carola. When we looked it up one time when we went to Bakersfield, we found it was in some fellow's vegetable field....no oil. We looked him up and he gave me $100 for the plot. But I digress. I have no idea when Herman died. Aunt Eva lived into her nineties in Fresno, and after she died, Carola received a copy of a letter that Eva had written to her good friend, and it looked very much as if Eva commited suicide. I still have that letter.

Robert “Bob” Hugh Clarno, Jr.

Bob was born on December 18, 1940 in Portland, Oregon to Robert and Betty Clarno. He grew up in San Diego California and graduated from Helix High School in 1958. After graduating he served honorably in the US Navy.

A few years after his time in the military, Bob went on a blind date and met Janet, the love of his life. They were married nine months later in November of 1964. Bob and Janet went on to discover and join The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and become sealed as husband and wife for time and eternity in the Los Angeles Temple in 1968.

Bob decided to continue his education and in time earned his teaching degree from San Diego University. He started his career as a teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing working in southern California, but spent most of his career in Southern Oregon, where he and his family had moved to by 1980.

As a teacher, Bob helped countless students (as well as others in the deaf community) by imparting and using his knowledge to work within the system or by cutting the red tape to provide needed resources. In his efforts to teach his students he was never deterred. Even though he often had to build from scratch suitable programs and materials for them and consistently break ground on new territory, he relished the challenge and found joy in benefiting all he came in contact with. In fact, Bob was honored for his work by being chosen as Citizen of the Year by KTVL Channel 10 Medford, Oregon in 1990.

Bob also devoted countless hours of service to many other people through his church. He held many callings, including being a revered scout master, a bishop and serving three missions with his wife Janet. He touched many lives as he selflessly offered support and assistance to whomever needed it and in whatever way it was needed.

In what little spare time he had, Bob enjoyed things like science fiction movies, classical music, family history research, building projects and spending time outdoors. But most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family. With all of his responsibilities he still put family as priority by going on camping trips, reading books to his younger children every night, going on regular dates and evening walks with his wife and making himself available for whenever someone in the family needed advice or a helping hand.

Robert Clarno was a beloved husband, father and a man of honor, strength and integrity and he is greatly missed. He is survived by his wife, 9 children and 75 grandchildren and great grandchildren.

From: Bette Clarno
Subject: Re: First family of your Uncle Val

Helen married again after her divorce from Otto aka Uncle Val. to a Sam somebody. Jeanne always thought of him as her "real" father. Jeanne married a fellow named Bill Soderberg. When we moved to San Diego in 1952, they were living in San Marcos and had a dog kennel. Later they moved to Bonita and raised tropical fish for aquariums. Bill had his own plane with which he transported the fish to different markets.

Helen died of cancer sometime in the 60's, I think. When my Mom and Carola came here for Rob's first wedding to Sandy, we went to see Jeanne, but that was the only time I went to her home. but she used to call me once a year, just after New Years, and start to talk. It would take me about five minutes, sometimes, to figure out who it was. I saw her three times at Old Town... unplanned. she was an artist... making baskets, and used to display her work there sometimes.

Then one year she diclosed that she had breast cancer, too. They tried "natural" remedies, but never had 'chemo", I don't think. In 1992 Bill took her in their motorhome to their son who lived near Tuscon. Her daughter-in-law and Bill nursed her there until she passed away. Bill sent us, and her many other friends, letters telling of her last days. She was two years younger than me.

Their youngest son, Danny, used to work for an elderly woman who lived just a street over from where Betty ( Sal's client ) lived... Crown Point area?

So that was Jeanne.

Love, Bette

------Some other notes from Mark:

The Sam was Sam Hussey. Helen Hussey signed Val Martin's death certificate after his suicide in 1936. I have copies of both Val Martin's and his second wife, Elizabeth Hope Evan's death certificates.
