The Clarno Era by Arthur H. Campbell.

1901 7 Sep obituary of grandson, William H. Clarno in the Orangeville, Courier, "His paternal grandfather, a native of France, imigrated to America early in life and settled in Virginia."

Following written by Newell B. Clarno, Jr.
https://www.ancestry.com/account/profile/055e280c-0006-0000-0000-000000000000?compareToTestId=9F91D2E8-0B4B-4E7B-A0CD-2747BFA0EF5D

I have been interested in family history for many, many years, and now wish that I had a least written down some of the stories that I have heard, along with asking additional questions. It wasn't until we had moved to Central Oregon that I began to look into some of the stories and began researching some of my ancestry.

There are several stories on now the Clarno Line arrived in America, along with several spelling of Clarno. Clarneau, which is used by some of Clarno's is one of the may spellings. In addition to Clarneau, Edward W. Clarno has recorded the following spellings: Claro, Clarns, Clermoe, Clarnow, Clarvoe, and Clarnvo. He has also found a "John Clarvo" who signed the Oath of Fidelity in 1788 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. I ask is the "v" acutely an "n"?

The first story that I have heard concerning the Clarno arrival in America proclaims that there was two brothers, one of which may have had the first name of John, had a very large estate in France, and had committed some crime, which was punishable by death and somehow they had managed to escape to America. It is told that this estate would be given back to any Clarno who would be willing to go back to France and receive the punishment, death.

'Another Story' "proclaims that John Clarno left France, traveled by ship to Canada, and then to the Chesapeake Bay area on the east coast of America. The trip was followed by an incident which occurred as he was traveling across the Bay. He was a watchmaker by trade and brought his inventory of fine watches with him on his voyage to America. The ship was almost ashore when is caught fire. John stuffed his pockets with his watches, but, to his dismay, the weight was too great for him to swim, so he dropped his inventory of watches into the Bay. If true, this incident may have influenced him to become a farmer after he arrived in Virginia, or at least to change his profession in the new world.

Another story reveals that John was a sailor in the French Navy and jumped ship during a port of call in the Chesapeake Bay. Still another story indicates John left France and settled in Atlanta, Georgia area where the French Huguenots settled in large numbers. One descendant reports that John and Mary Clarvoe were listed in tax records from the state of Virginia for the year of 1790, and there were two children, John and William." From HERITAGE OF THE CLARNO FAMILIES NOW LIVING IN THE UNITED STATES, written by Edward W. Clarno.

None of these stories has any substantiation, but have been passed down from family to family.
Basically the Clarno Family has been traced back to John Clarno, born around 1770, presumably in France, who married Mary around 1789 and had the following children: William George Clarno, born June 30, 1793 in Virginia, Andrew Clarno, born 1798, Polly Elizabeth, born 1806, and Lovian, born 1810. John died in 1815, and Mary then married Stephen T. Logan.

William George Clarno married Sarah (Sally) Whitman, April 10, 1817 and had the following children: Andrew D. Clarno, born around 1820 in Ohio, George W. Clarno, born December 17, 1824 in Madison Co., Ohio, William Henry Clarno, Francis Clarno, Nancy Jane Clarno, and Ester Clarno. William George died September 23, 1833 at Hittle Grove, Ill and is buried at Hittle Grove Cemetery. After William's death, Sarah married Charles F. Ewing, July 20, 1848 in Tazwell Co., Ill.

George W. Clarno married Melinda Leach (born September 18, 1833 in Ill) and had the following children: George Washington Clarno, born February 28,1850, Tazewell Co., Illinois, Melissa, born October 27, 1851, Henry Lawence, born September 8, 1855, in Tazewell Co, Ill., Eliza A., born 1855, Francis (Frank) W., born January 15, 1860 in Colwell Co., Ohio, Sarah, born December 26, 1861, William M., born Feb (or Ded) 1864, in California, Annie (Anna) E., born January 4, 1866, and Mary E., born December 6,1868. Melinda died March 26, 1870 at Smith River, Ca, and is buried at the Smith River Cemetery. George W. when married Mary Frances Engleman, born January 1, 1855 in Shasta Co., Ca. They had the following children: Lucinda, born June, 17, 1876 at Smith River, Ca., Andrew J., born March 2, 1876, Smith River, Ca., Albert B., born January 2, 1878, Pistol River, Or., Oliver Perry (H.P.), born April 21, 1881, Pistol River, and an infant Girl, born May 2, 1885, Pistol River Or. George W. died August 1, 1911, Central Point, Jackson Co., Oregon and is buried at 100F Cemetery, Central Point, Or., in Block 187.

One in particular reached out to me and their 3rd or 4th Great Grandfather is Levi Baker from Alexander County, NC.I'm working on a theory that Nathan's father is Nathan Baker from Iredell County and Nathan's uncle's are John & Isaac Baker. Levi is Isaac's son, which would make our Nathan that died Aft. 1883 cousins with Levi. I'm going to start my research in Maryland and work my way back down to North Carolina.
