G. Edmond Mariani would tell his daughters he was down to his last 35 cents when he and their mother started the masonry restoration business that still bears the family name.
"He said he would never allow that to happen -- to be that poor again," daughter Charlotte M. Amatangelo, of Scott, recalled.
Mr. Mariani, the co-founder of Mariani & Richards, died Friday at his home in Scott. He was 96.
He was the son of the late Giusto E. and Stella Gambogi Mariani. Born in Pittsburgh's Friendship neighborhood, he grew up in East Liberty.
Mr. Mariani was a graduate of Peabody High School and Duquesne University. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army Air Forces, entering as a private and rising to the rank of major. As part of his service, he was sent to study statistics at Harvard before being assigned to military bases in Florida.
He and his late wife, Josephine, started Mariani & Richards in 1950 with limited funds and limited knowledge of the masonry repair and waterproofing business, according to their daughter.
"He always said they got on a streetcar and rode down to the Carnegie Library to research French drains," Mrs. Amatangelo said, referring to the trenches that carry water away from structures.
There was never really a "Richards" in the business. Mr. Mariani originally had a partner named Herb Sullivan, but he didn't want his name connected to the company in case it failed, Mrs. Amatangelo said. The Marianis bought out Mr. Sullivan's interest and the business continues to operate under family ownership.
Over the past six decades the company has done restoration work on some of the region's best known stone, brick and masonry buildings. They include St. Paul Cathedral, Sacred Heart Church, the Fine Arts Building and Hunt Library at Carnegie Mellon University, Fallingwater and Friendship Hill (the historic Albert Gallatin estate near Point Marion).
After Hurricane Hugo hit Charleston, S.C., in 1989, Mr. Mariani, who was nearly 74, traveled with workers from his business to help with restoration of the city's 19th-century structures.
"He was a humble, low-key person -- a regular Joe," said Richard Fallon, of Scott, a friend of 50 years.
Mr. and Mrs. Mariani were among the founding members of SS. Simon and Jude Church in Scott. "He was active in everything in the church, and one of the major figures behind its construction," Mr. Fallon said.
"I was surprised to find out how old Ed was," Mr. Fallon said. "I thought he was much younger, since he was so active and was always moving."
When Mr. Mariani's wife died in 2006 at age 90, they had been married for 64 years.
In addition to his daughter, Mr. Mariani is survived by another daughter, Andrea M. Freeborough, of Mt. Lebanon; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today and Monday at the William Slater II Funeral Home, 1650 Greentree Road, Scott. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at SS. Simon and Jude Church. Entombment will be in Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
