Athlete was guided by love of mentoring youth
Kevin M. DiVecchio

TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Monday, October 3, 2005
Kevin M. DiVecchio was the responsible big brother both on the football field and in the classroom.
Mr. DiVecchio, 24, of North Huntingdon, Westmoreland County, died Saturday, Oct. 1, 2005, at Excela Health Latrobe Area Hospital after a car accident. He was born in Sewickley.
He excelled in academics and sports at Norwin High School, Westmoreland County. At 6 feet tall and 220 pounds, he was a force on the football team's defensive line. He also played basketball and baseball and was on the varsity teams of a number of sports for three years.
After graduating from Norwin High in 1999, Mr. DiVecchio channeled his passion for playing into coaching. He coached the football team of his church, St. Agnes in North Huntingdon, and later became assistant coach of Norwin High's ninth-grade football team.
His maturity and his patience made him a natural.
"He was popular with kids. He tried to be their buddy," said his father, Ralph DiVecchio. "He was soft-hearted. He was hard to anger."
While attending the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, Mr. DiVecchio worked as a dormitory resident assistant.
"He was very focused," said his father. "Sometimes he loved to joke around. He acted very mature for his age."
"He never let things get him down," said his mother, Carol Shope DiVecchio of Canonsburg, Washington County. "He was there for me."
After graduating from Pitt with a bachelor's degree in biology in 2003, Mr. DiVecchio toyed with the idea of becoming a doctor or pharmacist, his family said. But his love of mentoring youth led him toward a teaching career. He earned a teaching certificate in December from St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Westmoreland County.
Since then he had been substitute teaching in advanced placement biology at Norwin High School, where he dreamed of landing a full-time teaching post. He also worked part time at a doctor's office in Greensburg to learn through experience how to deal with children with learning disabilities.
Mr. DiVecchio loved to spend time with his family and large circle of relatives. He never left home without giving his parents a hug and kiss, his father said. He did so before leaving to visit his friends in Johnstown last week. On his way back, his car went out of control while traveling westbound on Route 30 in Latrobe about 3 a.m. Saturday.
Born March 18, 1981, in Sewickley, Mr. DiVecchio grew up in Center, Beaver County, and North Huntingdon, Westmoreland County. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Phyllis and Vince DiVecchio.
Survivors include his parents, Ralph, of North Huntingdon, and Carol Shope DiVecchio, of Canonsburg; a brother, Jason DiVecchio, of North Huntingdon; and maternal grandparents, Robert and Judy Shope of Center.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today at James W. Shirley Funeral Home Inc. 176 Clay Pike, North Huntingdon. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Agnes Church, 11400 St. Agnes Lane, North Huntingdon. Burial will follow at Irwin Union Cemetery.
