Robert “Pitch” D. Piccinini age 88 years, of Ely, Nevada passed away August 1, 2013. He was born June 15, 1925 in Ely, Nevada to Dominick and Tonita Piccinini.

Robert served his Country in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946. He was a Deputy Sheriff for twenty plus years. Robert loved competition shooting and was on the Governors top 20 many times. He enjoyed hunting and at a young age enjoyed racing stock cars.

He is survived by his son Tom Piccinini; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; two brothers Eugene and Jerry Piccinini; sister Margaret “Zoo Zoo” Trampa and niece Linda Saiz. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother Jim Piccinini; sisters Lilly and Violet and great grandson J.J. Junior Wright.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at 1:00 P.M. at the Ely City Cemetery.

I knew that if keep beating at my computer keyboard, I would find Jerry's grandmother. I think I have but remember, I might be all wrong.

You called her Mary Susan, in Italian that would most likely be Maria Assunta. Assunta being typically translated into English as Susan.

Since her first child, Mary, was born about 1892 (the child was 17 years old in the 1910 census), Maria Assunta probably immigrated to the US in 1890 or 1891. I would expect that Giovanni Ricci had already been here for some years.

So searching on castlegarden.org and familysearch.org, I found a Maria Assunta Sforza 21y (born about 1870) arriving 28 Jul 1891 at New York. According to the on-line data, she was going to "WEEST-END-OH" which certainly must be a poor transcription of Wooster, Ohio.

The trascription does not list the hometown in Italy.

The arrival date on this ship is before Ellis Island opened so its much harder to find information and I can't find the original manifest.

On the same ship was Alessandro Sforza 23y (born about 1868) also going to "WEEST-END-OH". This might be her brother. I found that he came to the US again on 23 May 1895. On that manifest, it clearly says he was going to Wooster, Ohio.

If this is her brother, I found a 1920 passport application for him. In that application, it says that his father, Pietro, lives in South America. How about that connection to your family story that the Sforza's were from South America!

I've attached the two pages of Alessandro's passport application. Look on the second page there is a photo of him. Look familiar?
