Joseph Sertic [photo]

Joseph "Dozie" Sertic passed away December 3, 2011 at William Bee Ririe Hospital in Ely, Nevada. He was born January 28, 1920 in McGill, NV to Micha and Eka Dogan Sertic.

Joseph was a World War II Veteran, serving in the Aleutian Campaign and European Theater. He was in the U.S. Army Air Corp and a Staff Sargent with the Mobile Training Unit. He was a Propeller Specialist and an instructor. Joseph married Claudina Di Sanza on August 26, 1951 in Ely, NV. He worked for Kennecott Copper and his last place of employment was with the State Highway Department as Shop Supervisor. He enjoyed working in his shop and was a good mechanic. Joseph was an avid race car and motorcycle enthusiast, he enjoyed riding his 1947 Harley Davidson.

Joseph is survived by his wife Claudina of 60 years; sister Cathryne "Ki" (Paul) Tilby of Ely, NV; two sister-in-laws Jewel Sertic of Sparks, NV and Joann Sertic of Sacramento, CA; brother-in-law Roland Di Sanza of Las Vegas, NV and Numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Mike, Nick, Mark and John and sisters Helen Butte and Marie Sertic.

The Recitation of The Rosary is scheduled for Thursday, December 8, 2011 at 7:00 P.M. at Mountain Vista Chapel. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, December 9, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Father Paul Oye will officiate. Burial will follow in the Ely City Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Mark Sertic, Joe Sertic, Gus Assuras, Paul Tilby, Al Miller and Gary Glenn. Honorary Pallbearers will be Charles Basso, Roland Di Sanza, Harold Whipple, Steve Bakaric, Romolo Di Cianno and Jerry Robison.

Donations can be made to Home Health Services of Nevada, c/o Marie Carrick, 685 Lyons Avenue Ely, NV 89301.

Arrangements were made through Mountain Vista Chapel Ely, NV.

Rita Mary DiSanza of Ely died on Friday, Oct. 14, 2005, in Las Vegas.

Mrs. DiSanza was born on May 22, 1927, in Ocate, N.M., to Santiago and Benigna Gallegos.

She was a resident of the area since 1936 when she moved from New Mexico. She was the owner of Rita's Arts and Crafts and a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Her hobbies included arts and crafts and spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband Roland DiSanza of Ely; two sons: Gene DiSanza of Las Vegas and Frank (Karen) DiSanza of Henderson; two daughters: Lucy (Don) Reed of Nipomo, Calif., and Laura (Terry) Cupp of East Las Vegas; 10 grandchildren: David Reed, Michael DiSanza, Stephen Cupp, Janet Cupp, Suzanne DiSanza, Edward DiSanza, Rachel Klaft, Jeanne DiSanza, David Lang and Stewart Lang; five great-grandchildren: Corbin Klaft, Taylor Cordero, Ella Klaft, Brianna Lang and Justin Lang; and a brother Jimmy Gallegos.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Eugene Sanslow; two brothers: Edward Gallegos and John Gallegos and three sisters: Rose, Nora and Helen.

A rosary service took place on Thursday, Oct. 20, at Mountain Vista Chapel.

The Mass of Christian burial is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 21, 11 a.m., at Sacred Heart Church. Burial will take place at the Ely City Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Michael DiSanza, Edward DiSanza, Stephen Cupp, Don Reed, Terry Cupp and Charlie Basso. Honorary pallbearers are David Trujillo and Joseph Sertic.

At the family's request, donations in her memory can be sent to the Alzheimer's Association, 705 S. Wells, Suite 225, Reno, NV 89502.

She was the youngest child of Philip and Eufemia. She went to nursing school in the Scranton area and enlisted in the US Navy in about 1942. She served for a total of about 17 years with a couple of year break at the end of WWII and prior to the outbreak of the Korean conflict. On May 15, 1959 she married John Merrill Arfman who was from Brooklyn and Roslyn NY. John and Lois had two children, me (John M. Arfman Jr.) born March 7, 1960 and Philip George Arfman, born March 7, 1962. I know it's a little strange, but my brother and I and our mother all had the same birthday. 2009 Obituary in the Ely Times: "Amelia I. "Babe" Basso went to meet her Heavenly Father, Saturday, November 7, 2009. She was born June 15, 1917 in Elko, to parents Frank and Giovannia Rossolo.

Babe was honored in her life for her 10,290 hour of volunteer service as a pink lady at the William Bee Ririe Hospital. She started her service in 1968 at the tender age of 50. She retired from Blood Services in 2004, after heading blood drives for 12 years.

She married Charles John Basso, June 25, 1938. They remained happily married for 71 years. They made their home in Ely.

She is survived by her beloved husband Charlie; son Charles V. (Kathy) Basso; daughter-in-law Janet Basso; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephew.

She is preceded in death by her son Ronald Frank Basso; sisters, Elvira (Edmond) DiSanza and Mafielda (Fredrico) Ricci; brothers, Hugh (Pearl) Rossolo and Hector Rossolo.

Recitation of the Rosary is scheduled for Friday, November 13, 2009 at 7:00 P.M. at Mountain Vista Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 10:00 A.M. at The Sacred Heart Church. Burial will follow in the Ely City Cemetery. Father Paul Oye will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Alex Anderson Brooke Anderson, Cierra Anderson, Hector Basso, Sean Basso and Jerry Ricci. Honorary Pallbearers will be Joe Sertic, Mike Lemich, Terry Reck, Randy Reck, Antonio Ricci, Clarence Henroid, Hugh Ricci, Weston Basso and Jordan Oxborrow. "

Charles John Basso was called to the Lord on February 18, 2011. He was born in Reno, Nevada on January 19, 1916 to Victor Basso and Antonietta Guarnieri Basso. He was the only son with six sisters. Their mother passed away when he was a small child and their father put the children, at the State's insistence, in the orphanage in Carson City, where they spent several years.

He married Amelia I. (Babe) Rossolo on June 25, 1938 and moved to Ely, Nevada, where they raised two sons. He worked as an electrician for Ely Light & Power Co., a heavy equipment operator for Consolidated Copper Co. and Isbell Construction Co., worked on road construction in Nome, Alaska, a mechanic for Pioneer Equipment Co. and the Nevada State Highway Department where he retired. He also spent several years doing his civic duty as an Ely City Councilman and a member of the White Pine County School Board. He also served 20 plus years as a member of the Ely Volunteer Fire Department.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 71 years Babe, November 7, 2009 and his son Ronald Frank Basso, March 18, 1997.

He is survived by his son Charles V. (Kathy) Basso, daughter in-law Janet Basso, 5 grandchildren: Hector Basso, Sean (Amy) Basso, Michele (Scott) Basso-Schricker, Mary (Larry) Green, Marcia Basso and 7 great grandchildren.

Services will be held in Ely, Nevada.

Rosaries on Friday, February 25, 2011 at Mt. Vista Chapel at 7:00 P.M. Funeral on Saturday, February 26, 2011 at Sacred Heart Church at 12:00 Noon.

In lieu of flowers, donations may e made to the Ely Home Health Services.
