SARAH PALUMBO WILSON (age 102) passed away
We just learned of Sara's passing in 2020 from Covid
Sara was born in Dawson, New Mexico to Italian immigrants Domenico Palumbo and Maria Capone Palumbo on July 16, 1918 and was the fourth of nine children. She attended Dawson High School and graduated in 1937. At 17, her mother died of pneumonia and her father followed, succumbing to "black lung" in 1946. When the United States entered World War II, Sara began work at the Remington Arms Munitions Plant in Lakewood, Colorado loading incendiary powder into bullet casings. Her next wartime job was riveting airplane wings at Northrop Aviation plant in Englewood, California. In 1945 she returned to Dawson where she worked as the manager of the drug department at Phelps Dodge Mercantile. She married Frank Wilson—also from Dawson and recently back from the war—in 1947. Their family lived in Dawson until the coal mining town closed in 1950 and the family relocated to Denver, Colorado. Sara worked in the home as housewife and mother to two children until 1961, when she began working in the cafeteria for Jefferson County Public Schools. After Frank's passing in 1968, she added a second job working in the office of Denver Dry Goods at the Lakeside shopping center. She retired after working in both positions for more than 20 years, and in 1993 she began a new career as caretaker to her newborn granddaughter. Sara enjoyed a myriad of activities and frequented the Apex Community Recreation Center for yoga and tai chi classes. One of her favorite hobbies was reading crime and mystery novels and she often had several going at once. She loved crossword puzzles and ciphers and completed almost every day. Sara was an avid basketball and baseball fan and when games were not televised, she would listen to them on the radio. Since 1951, Sara has been a parishioner at the Shrine of St. Anne Catholic Church in Arvada, CO. She received regular recognition for her kindness and persistence and was recognized by organizations across the community. Sara was a loving matriarch to all of her family and was the extended families' communicator and mediator. She leaves behind an incredible legacy of kindness and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband Frank Wilson, her precious great grandson Quinn Wilson, her parents, and her siblings: Joseph "Jiggy"(Leota) Palumbo, Arthur "Stach" (Ruth) Palumbo, Laura (Monty) Stratton, Josephine (Olin) Wacker, Emily (Herb) McIntyre, Lilly (Albert) Dale, Michael (Jean) Palumbo and Angelo Palumbo.

Occupation: Coal Miner
email from husband of niece, Monty Stratton, Sep 2008, I had asked find out more about Angelo Palumbo who died in the 1923 mine explosion.: "I have been trying to get an answer to your question by talking to Laura and her sister in Denver (Arvada). Seems as though neither one has too much to offer. We are not in touch with any of his offspring. In fact, I don't think they even know for sure there are any. According to Sara, he was married twice; his first wife died and is buried in Dawson. His second wife remarried and went back to Italy. That is about all of the info that I was able to glean out of them concerning Angelo, their dad's brother."
1910 14 May EI arrival, 28y, going to brother Domenico in Dawson, NM. Wife in SPA - Elisabetta.
His first wife was Elisabetta Ricci. She died in 1911 and is buried in Dawson.
In 1916, Angelo and Olga diFiore arrived in the US at Boston, MA. He was 34 years old and she was 19 years old. They were listed as husband and wife. They are both shown as born in San Pietro Avellana. Relative in SPA, aunt, Maria Colaianni. They were going to the home of brother, Domenico Palumbo, in Dawson, New Mexico. Travelled with Olga's half-brother, Nicola Mariani.
Angelo's 1917 WWI Draft Registration lists his wife as Olga diFiore. He was born on 30 Aug 1881, is 37 years old and is a US Citizen.
The 1920 census shows his family, Angelo (38 years), Olga (wife 24y), son Armando (3y) and daughter Elizabeth (8 months). Angelo is listed as born in Campobasso and Olga is listed as born in Aquila. From an earlier Ellis Island arrival, I believe that Olga was from Roccaraso, province of Aquila, Italy. Roccaraso is about 8 miles (as the crow files) from San Pietro and about 25 miles by road.
When Angelo died in the mine explosion in 1923, his death certificate listed his wife as Angela. The death certificates were not filled out by family members but appear to have been filed out by Phelps-Dodge employees so the name of the wife may be wrong.

Her name is Rosa Palumbo and her parents' names were Angelo and Olga. She is now 94 , she has one sister , her name is Elisa and she is older than her. She doesn't remember a lot about Dawson....she told me that she was two or three when her mother came back in Italy after the death of her father in the mine. Olga left Dawson with her four children Armando, Elisa , Rosa and Angelo. I hope sometime I could go to Dawson to visit the cemetery. Thank you to have showed the cross of the tomb of my great grandfather. I send to you a picture of Angelo Olga and their children." She emailed me a photo of Angelo and Olga.
email from her granddaughter, Cristina Perinelli, Jan 2016: "Olga di Fiore is my great grandmother. Her surname was Di Fiore because her mother Rosa remarried Amico Mariano.
