Archer, William H. (b. ABT 1902, d. 1940/1941)
Note: Entry in undated address book of Betty Frank Taylor Churchill:
Mr. William Archer, Camp Atterbury, Indiana. The next entry in the book is Kathleen T. Archer.

1930 census, possible: Chicago, Cook,IL, Radio Salesman, single, 28y, born IL, parents born in IL.

1935 Indianapolis (IN) City Directory: "Wm H (Kathleen D) div slsmgr Ind Bell Tel Co h6230 College av."

1940 Indianapolis (IN) City Directory: "Wm H (Kathleen T) pub office mgr IBTCo h63230 College av"

In Betty's stuff, there were many photos taken probably about 1942/43 as Jack Taylor was entering into the Army Air Forces. None of these photos included William Archer.

I don't know if this William Archer was Kathleen's husband or not. Might even be
a son of her husband. Photos and letters from the early 1940's (about the time that Jack and Betty were married) never mention him although Kathleen used the surname Archer for the rest of her life.

From letters, I know that Kathleen married a third time, to a man named "Lee". This was noted in a letter to Betty Churchill from Kay's sister, Polly Darlington, dated 20 Mar 1949. I don't know if Archer died or if they were divorced.

email from David Owings, Nov 2009: "Hello Mark, this was interesting reading. Francis Marion Webb mentioning "Andy" Andrew Peden Owings riding with the "boys" - this is the first time I have seen him mentioned in Civil War activities. And it would suggest that Andrew may well have rode with Quantrill since his father Joshua Holcomb Owings did and his step-mother Martha Elizabeth George Owings brothers did as well.
David"

" The following is copied from: The Oak Grove Webbs,Two Centuries of Genealogy and Biographical Sketches Beginning with Larkin Webb By Samuel C. Webb

Francis Marion Webb was a soldier in the Confederate Army under Generalissimo Robert E. Lee. He was sworn in at Lewisburg, Arkansas on January 1, 1863 in Company C, Colonel Shanks' Regiment, General Shelby's Brigade, Brigadier General Marmaduke's Division, General Price's Corps, Major General Kirby Smith's Western District. He was in his first battle only seven days later. In his own words:

" I was 18 years old Oct. 17, 1862 and on the night of December 3, 1862, I started to the army from near Chapel Hill, in company of Dr. Put Fulkerson, Tom Ragsdale and Jim Peak, old Uncle Dan'l George, Dave Faulkenberry, Tom Faulkenberry, Chauncey Husted, Andy Owings (Andrew Peden Owings), Jim Ives, _______Lawson, and Joseph Perry, our pilot. In the crowd (17 of us) there were two pistols and one gun. We went from there to the Arkansas River through the Federal Lines by traveling at night and lying in the brush by day, and never were attacked, nor had any trouble of any kind. We landed there on Christmas Eve , and I was sworn in on 1st of January 1863. My first battle was on January 8th at Springfield, MO. I enlisted in Company C, Shanks' Regiment, Shelby's Brigade, Marmaduke's Division, Price's Corps. , Trans-Mississippi Department of the Confederate Army. I continued in that command until the day of surrender at Shreveport, LA. I missed only one raid that Shelby made in MO, that was on account of sickness. I never was in hearing of a battle that our command was in, that I was not with them except one, and that was on account of sickenss. I never was wounded, never was hit but once,(shot my coat tail off. Coat tail was on side of horse, I was going toward the enemy) but a ball went so close to my ear that it made it sting--that was at Mark's Mill, Arkansas, on Steele's raid."

The following words about Francis Marion Webb are quoted from a letter by Georgia Payne Webb(Mrs. David M Webb) dated August 8, 1931, that was then read at the annual Webb Reunion:

" It is probable that all who are here today, in this family gathering, knew Francis Marion Webb, who passed away from us February 3, 1930, at the age of eighty-five years. Marion Webb was deeply loyal to the ties of kinship. He loved his family, and this feeling extended further to the families of his brothers and sisters, his cousins, and even his more distant relatives. When he began to grow old, and when his business cares began to grow lighter and he had time for quiet reflection, he often thought about his family connections. He took pleasure in seeing and talking with his relatives. He found that among the many members of the Webb family there were some who were only slightly acquainted with others. He wished that all of them might know and enjoy each other. He conceived the idea that by holding an annual family reunion his wishes for closer family acquaintanceship might be fulfilled. Seventeen years ago Marion Webb talked with some of his relatives about the matter of an annual family reunion, and that year, in October 1914, the first family gathering was held here in this park (at the farm of Samuel D Webb) where we are meeting today. For seventeen years we have been getting better acquainted with each other, appreciating each other more and more, taking greater interest in each other's lives, and finding greater enjoyment in each other's companionship...."
