Rafuse, Lee (b. )
Note: 1949 Letter to Betty Taylor from Polly (Mrs R L) Darlington in Chicago, IL - gives first name of Kay's new husband as Lee. Apparently, Kay did not take her third husband's name - at least the letters she wrote to the US Army in 1952, used Archer. Her SSDI is also listed as Archer.

Address book gives name as "Lee Rafuse", although I'm not certain that I can read the surname correctly. The address book, under 'A', shows Kathleen T. Archer, with that name crossed out and Lee Rafuse written in. Then, under 'R', is an entry for Lee Rafuse. Address in both cases is 940 E. 81st St. Apt 1, Chicago, 19, Illinois.

I found a 1949 envelope to Mrs. John L. Taylor with this return address:

Husband, First (b. )
Note: Email Nov 2007 from Harby Westmoreland: "I'll ask. I know that my mom and dad ran around with Betty & Jack socially. Also for what it's worth, Jack was actually Betty's 2nd husband. Betty had a very short marriage before Jack, that her parents were most unhappy with. I don't think my mother remembers the guy's name, but I'll ask."

From:HARBY WESTMORELAND
Subject:Re: Betty Churchill's first husband
To:Mark DiVecchio

I did talk to my mom briefly regarding Betty's first husband, but she only said that Betty's parents were very much against the marriage & it was annulled after a very short duration. I will ask her if she remembers the guys name or anything about him. I remember she said he worked at a service station, and she thought it to have been a fleeting infatuation. I will test her memory again tomorrow.
All the best,

Pierce, Lillian Bailey (b. 7 Oct 1874, d. 4 Jun 1937)
Note: This is NOT the Lillian Clark who was an opera singer. Her occupation as opera singer (per Gene Taylor, Sep 2013) is confusing. The 1930 census shows Richard's wife as 55 years old yet the 1933 newspaper article says the opera singer was 8 years old when she performed in 1915 in San Francisco (so born in 1907). The 1934 photo indicated the opera singer was born in San Francisco and was returning there in 1934 after 4 years in New York.

These census may be describing two different people as she got 10 years younger.

1870 census, St. Louis, St. Louis, MO. 5y (1865), listed as "Lillie D".

1880 census, St. Louis, St. Louis, MO, 15y (1865), Listed as "Lillie", born MO, at school, with f: George Pierce, 49y police officer, m: Lucretia V., 43y and brother, Charles L., 31y, traveling agent. TWO listings for this family in the census. 2nd listing is the same execpt that there is a second brother, Harry R, 21y, and Charles L. is listed as 23y.

1900 census, St. Louis, St. Louis, MO, 25y (1875), Listed as "Lillie B". Pierce. f: George Pierce (Jun 1833, 67y), m: Lucretia V. (Dec 1834, 65y), single, born Oct 1874 in MO, parents born in PA.

1910 census, St. Louis, St. Louis, MO, 30y (1880), listed as "Lillian B.", widowed, 0 children - 0 living, with mother 75y also windowed, Theatrical actress. Parents born in PA.

1920 census, not found in MO or IL.

1927 sang at the dedication of the new Elizabethtown Court House. She must have been married to RF by then. From http://www.state.il.us/court/circuitcourt/circuitmap/2nd.asp : "The Elizabethtown court house burned on two occasions (1884 and 1921) and many facts about the early history of Elizabethtown was lost. ". Gene Taylor told me this story but thought the year was 1924.
