WILLIAM JOHN GYLLECK (1929-2011)
William John Gylleck, 81, of Genoa, Ill., died Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011, at Lincolnshire Place, Sycamore.
Born Nov. 3, 1929, in Elgin, the son of Elmer and Ruth (Pierce) Gylleck, he married Shirley Pennington on Feb. 14, 1959. He was a graduate of Elgin High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Korean Conflict.
After his service in the Air Force, he was the owner and operator of Bill's Hamburger Shop, where he became known as "Hamburger Bill," and where he met Shirley Pennington. He loved people and conversation. Bill loved the outdoors, canoeing and camping. He was very active with his family as they grew up in Genoa. Scouting was a big part of the family for many years.
Bill retired from Contel/Verizon in 1985 and took care of his ailing parents, then he pursued his love of sailing.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; one son, John (Martha) Gylleck; one daughter, Barbara (Paul) Granados; 10 grandchildren, Sarah, Robert and James Crisman, Rachel (David) Didlake, Justin, Alex and Victor Granados and Tamsen, Kezia and Broeden Gylleck; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Bonnie (Gene) Taylor and Jane Howland.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
His visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at Crosswind Community Church, 13100 Cherry Road, Genoa, IL 60135. A memorial service will follow at 4 p.m. with the Rev. James Freund officiating. Burial will take place at Genoa Cemetery.
Memorials for William Gylleck can be made for the United Way Foundation, to service the Genoa community, in care of Slater-Butala Funeral Home, 132 W. Main, Genoa, IL 60135.
