SD&A Doodlebug #43

The Port City Car Company wrote: "MSTS SD&A #43 Gasoline-Electric Motorcar Of 1911. This version of an early motorcar, popularly known as a "doodlebug", is based on one motorcar purchased by the San Diego & Southeastern Ry. in 1914. Ex. Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh #1002 "Meteor". Built by GE/Watson, it was 66 feet long and seated 69 with a General Motors 16A4 engine. Single-end, center entrance. Acquired by the SD&A when the SD&SE was  purchaced in 1917. The model is a product of the Port City Car Company (PCCC). By Bill Hall, Chuck Zeiler and Paul DeVerter."

More details at
http://www.paradesquare.ca/railway/sd_&_a_gas_elec.htm

Look for file sda_db43.zip at http://www.train-sim.com/ or search for keyword "doodlebug". Also pick up the file its_who.zip. This file adds piano music to the passenger view. One note about the installation of  this file. After you follow the instructions in the readme.txt file, you must rename three files. To do this, delete the three sda*.sms files and then rename the db*.sms to sda*.sms. This is necessary because the *.eng file for the SD&A #43, uses the unique sda*.sms names instead of the generic sd*.sms names.

EMD GP9 v1.0 for Microsoft® Train Simulator

SD&AE GP-9 #101, #102, #103 & #104

In 1979, Kyle Railways took over operation of the SD&AE. They brought in tractive power from other Kyle operations and bought used power from other lines. Included in these were four ex-UP GP-9. Numbered 101  to 104, these were the main motive force during the last years of operation. I've taken a GP-20, which was the closest unit I could find that looked like a low-nose GP-9, and reskinned it for the SD&AE GP-9's.
Based on original work:
GP-20 model By Terry Anson  (nighthawk1)
Eng Provided By  Bob Boudoin (plainsman)
Lights by Kurt Kaminer (TrirailF40PHL)
Trucks Supplied by Brian Piotrowski (v1perfan)

You can download it from here. (3.7MB -  updated 1 Nov 2004 to restore window transparency to #102 and #103)

Note: this series uses the new GP38 cabview (NewView.zip by Dadbill - recently updated as NewView2.zip). You can get it from  http://www.train-sim.com/. This gives you the low-nose cab view correct for this GP-9.

MSTS CEFX Hopper 80403 2 Pack

From John Shields:  "Contains two versions of this car, one with a photo real paint scheme and one looking brand new. Repaints by John Shields of the Train Artisan car using ace and wag files from Lucio Moreira's Cefx 2 Bay Hopper Packs #'s 1 & 2. Includes detailed photos of this and other cars taken recently at Dos Cabezes on the San Diego and Imperial Valley (old San Diego and Arizona) Railroad."

John, I could not find an email address for you. Please contact me, I'd like to host your original ZIP file here.

You can download this consist as 80403.zip  from http://www.train-sim.com/.

John wrote:
A string of these cars was on the siding at Dos Cabezes in the Anza-Borrego State Park last month. I won't say who took the pictures of them. It is amazing how massive a modern rail car is. The wheels are a yard high. And climbing to the top of these hoppers was a little hairy, or so I hear...

The screenshots were taken at Dos Cabezes on Mark DiVecchio's awesome Carrizo Gorge Railroad available here. I do a lot of off-roading in that area, and Mark's route is incredibly accurate to the old SD&A and to the actual topography.

Thanks to Lucio Moreira for his CEFX hopper packs, which I used as a starting point and to Train Artisan for the original car, which came with the MSTS patch.

SD&AE Geeps cabview

In March of 2009, Dennis Jones wrote:

Had a few minutes to stop and develop a cabview for the SD&SE geeps.  This is a custom cab and please feel free to post on the web page Mark.  The file is to be placed in your Common.cab "EMD" folder.  Should enhance the overall feel when driving the SD&AE black and whites.  Let me know what you think.  Talk soon!

You can download it here (2.1 MB).

Tweeks and Such

Because of conflicts with folder names for several consists, I've had to rename some of the consists that I downloaded from train-sim.com. Thanks to Danny Jones for helping me identify the problem consists and the solutions.

1.  There were naming problems with the spbox4 and spbox5 sets of boxcars. I changed spbox4 to "SP Hi-Cube Boxcar". You can download them here (900KB) and here (3.2MB). These files correct problems with SP653003 and SP204263.

2. The speeder trailers which were previously available on the 3dtrains web site don't seem to be there anymore, at least I can't find them. You can download them here (64KB).

3. If there are any more consists problem, you may be able to fix them yourself. Just remember that the *.con files contain both the name of the folder and the name of the piece of rolling stock needed. This is, maybe, not such a good idea but that is how MSTS works. There may have been other cases where, because of naming problems, I chose a different name for the folder than you or even the original developer of the consist. MSTS does not otherwise care what you name the name folder as long as you are the only one using it. Once it is shared between users, these naming problems develop - and the folders must be named identically..

Remember that if you edit any of the MSTS *.con, *.wag or *.eng files, you must use a text editor that understands "Unicode". In Windows98, that does NOT include NOTEPAD, you must use WORDPAD instead.
