If data is correct, this picture was taken about 1871.

Data found on the web, though, indicates it is her Mother. I've found other references that she was called "Grandmother Snider" - using her maden name.

I'm not sure who this person is. A photo of Lulu Bell, identifed as his sister, is also in Hosea's Pocket Album. Lulu Bell is also identified as "Mrs. Dr. Douglas".

Hosea's aunt, Mary Peden (the missing one born about 1805) married George Bell on 22 Jan 1822 according to Henry Peden's book. They had 6 children : Louise, Diantha, Polina, Pat, Ellie, and Laura. They were apparently all born in KY. Looks like 1 boy (Pat) and 5 girls.

Hand written notes from Winona Billee Churchill say that "Polly married a Bell". No other information. I'm pretty sure that the Mary Peden born in 1805 was that Polly.

This can't be that Bell. This George Bell looks like he is in his 20's. Its a tintype that most likely was taken after the Civil War. It would make him about the same age as Hosea. He might be descendant from Mary Peden and George Bell but I can't find any data. That would make him Hosea's cousin.

Considering that Hosea's father, Andrew J., was born in 1812, This George could be 2 generations down from Mary Peden and George Bell. He would have to be descendent from Pat Bell, the only male in the 6 children.

Miss M.J. Butt

Miss M. J. Butt

above hand written on the back of photo. It is
written in the old handwritting style. The "Miss" looks like "Mifs".

On the photo album page, handwritten:
"*** Butt". Very hard to read, must be "Mary".

In handwritten notes left by Wenona Billee Churchill, it shows Moses R. Peden (son of Andrew J) marrying "Butt", no first name was given. In sources on the Web, I found that Moses married  Marinda J. <no last name>. I then found a Butt family from Simpson Co, KY and Sumner, TN with sisters Marinda and Nancy J. (Father: John Francis Butt, Mother: Serena Bush) So I believe that Moses R. Peden married this Marinda J. Butt.

Hosea Ausbrooks Peden had a picture of his sister-in-law in his Pocket Album.

Some other notes:
Marinda Butt
b: 1844, Sumner, TN (Moses was born 9 Jan 1848, in Simpson, KY.), Married 17 Oct 1867, other web source showed her birth as "Abt.1846 <Simpson, Ky>" ( So there is a chance, I'm wrong here. There could have been two Marinda J Butts.)

Nancy J Butt
  b: 1852, Sumner, TN

Another clue, both her parents are buried in the Pirkle Cemetary, Franklin, Simpson, KY. So it might be likely that they moved from Sumner TN to Franklin, KY. This could be suppored by looking at the birth locations of her siblings. Olly and James B were born in Simpson, KY while all the older children were born in Sumner, TN. This supports a move date somewhere between 1852 (Nancy born in Sumner, TN) and 1860 (Olly born in Simpson Co, KY).

Another clue, the photo has printing on the back from a  photographer in Franklin, KY. Printed on back of photo:
B. Z. Cannaway,
Resident Artist,
East Side Public Square,
Franklin, KY

Hello Mark,

My name is Teresa Johnson, I am the gr-great granddaughter of Nancy J. Butt.

In 1871 she married John Frances Pirkle, their son Alexander Bingley (all 3 are buried at  Pirkle Cemetery, Franklin Ky) was my grandmother's (Nellie B.Pirkle Ray) father .

I came across your site while researching another ancestor, William Clay Ausbrooks. I am somewhat new to genealogy research, but to this point have not  found Peden in our line.

Thanks,
Teresa Johnson
