Camillo DiVecchia

This Page last updated on .

My grandfather was born on 28 Apr 1874 in Sant'Eufemia a Maiella (SEaM), Pescara, Italy to Michelangelo and Agnese Mancini. He spent at least four periods in the US before he brought over his wife and children, 1903-1904, 1905-08, 1910-14, and 1920-28. He became a US citizen in 1928 and brought over his wife, Lucia diGiovine, and two of his four children in 1930. He died on 19 Jul 1950 and is buried in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Aliquippa, PA. I was two years old when he died so he knew me but I have no memory of him.

He and his wife had five children, my father, Pasquale (Patsy),  Antonio (Anthony), Agnese, Eufemia and Michelangelo. Michelangelo died in childhood.

1874 Sant'Eufemia a Maiella

My grandfather was born on 28 Apr 1874 in Sant'Eufemia a Maiella (SEaM), Pescara, Italy to Michelangelo and Agnese Mancini.

1902/3 Arrival

Camillo's first arrival was either 1902 or 1903. The 1902 year is from his 1905 arrival and the 1903 year was from his 1910 arrival. I've not been able to find this manifest.

1904 Marriage

On 28 Jan 1904, my grandparents married in Sant'Eufemia a Maiella

1905 Arrival

From the ancestry.com data base, his second arrival:

From ancestry.com, the birth date on this record works out correctly for him. He and my grandmother, Lucia diGiovine, were married on 28 Jan 1904 in Italy. This may be his return trip to the US.

World War I Years

As far as I can tell, my grandfather returned to Italy about 1914. He had 3 more children, all sons, in 1915,1917, and 1920. I do not know if he served in the Italy Army. I have begun an effort to locate his Italian Army papers.

1920 Arrival

From the Ellis Island Data Base, I was able to find information on what I think is the fourth and last time that Camillo came over. Here is his passport:
1920 Passport
My uncle Tony had saved this and I was able to get it in July of 2004.

It was hard to find because the spelling in the index was DiVechio. Probably means Camillo had changed his last name by then.

Note that wife, Lucia diGiovine,  is listed as "A. DiVecchio", and his brother-in-law "N. diGiovine" is listed as his father. This arrival was referenced in his naturalization papers shown below.

Based on adjacent entries on the Manifest, others from Sant'Eufemia that he was travelling with include:

Nicola Mancini, 27 yrs, wife A. Mancini in Aliquippa, PA. Also references going to "Father G. Pietro" (often a shortened version of diPietrantonio), Aliquippa PA. In US 1910-1913
Maria D'Amico, 22 yrs, mother M. DeAmico, going to Youngstown, OH, Father G. DiVecchio

There was another entry I found that did not include my father but included some of the people he came over with previously. Per Ellis Island, arrived 30 March 1924:
Nicola Mancini, farmer, 30 yrs, 1920-23
    Arcangela DiVecchia Mancini,  29 yrs
Carolina Mancini,  3 yrs, their daughter
Pietro diGiovine, farmer, 31 yrs, 1919-23, father: Giovanni diGiovine
    Eufemia deAngelis diGiovine, 26 yrs

All were going to 519 Beaver Ave, Aliquippa, PA.

1928 Citizenship

My grandfather was naturalized on January 9, 1928 by the United States District Court at Pittsburgh, PA.
Camillo became a US Citizen in 1928 at the Federal Court in Pittsburgh, PA.
My uncle Tony had saved this and I was able to get it in July of 2004.

The Naturalization papers document the arrival at Ellis Island on the SS New Rochelle, 15 Nov 1920. I believe that he had to be in the US for 7 years to be eligible for citizenship. It was soon after that  his wife, Lucia, and their two sons Pasquale (my father) and Antonio (Uncle Tony) arrived in the US in 1930. The two daughters came over later, Agnese about 1935 and Eufemia in 1960. (Note: by 1928, the wife did not automatically become a citizen on her husband's papers but the children still did. my grandmother, Lucia, never became a US citizen which I've confirmed as I have now a copy of her WWII Alien Registration Form.)
Certificate of Arrival for Naturalization Purposes and Declaration of Intention
The Certificate of Arrival, dated 22 Mar 1927, attests that he last entered the US on 15 Nov 1920 on the New Rochelle. The Declaration of Intention, dated 1 Apr 1925, states he was 50 years old. DOB 20 Apr 1874 in S. Eufemia A. Maiella, Italy. They he is married and his wife Lucia lives in Italy. You had to be in the US for 5 years before you could file a Declaration of Intention. The name on the form is Camillo DiVecchia.
Petition for Naturalization. 5 Aug 1927.
Camillo DiVecchia. Repeats a lot of information already shown on the Declaration of Intention. Lists four children and their DOB (see below). Witnessed by Nicola diPietrantonio and Nicola Mancini both from Aliquippa.

Oath of Allegiance, 9 Jan 1928. Camillo DiVecchia. Taken at the District Court of the United States, State of Pennsylvania, Western District of Pennsylvania.

The Petition for Naturalization listed four children:
Agnese    June 13th, 1905    Italy (Note: correct date in June 21)
Eufemia    Jan 23rd, 1909    Italy  (Note: correct date is Jan 22)
Pasquale    Sept 16th, 1917    Italy (Note: correct date is Sept 6)
Antonio    April 15th, 1920    Italy (Note: correct date is Apr 8)

A fifth child, Michelangelo, born in 1915, died in Italy in 1921.
