has been hard at work digitizing the civil records from towns in Italy including my father's hometown of Sant'Eufemia a Maiella. They have not done my mother's hometown of San Pietro Avellana.

We discovered the records from Sant'Eufemia were available last year and now they have added many more records so that it appears that every available civil birth/marriage/death record from 1809 to about 1920 is on-line.

Here are the records that are available:

1809-1815

The Napoleonic Era - most of Italy was under French rule and we can thank Napoleon for forcing the Italians to start civil record keeping. Of course before 1809, the Catholic Church was very diligent in keeping baptism/marriage/death records but, so far, none of the Church records have been digitized that I know of.

Before 1844, Sant'Eufemia was not a separate town and its records were kept in the nearby town, Caramanico. So for 1809-1815 records, we need to look at Caramanico where our town is listed in the records as Villa Sant'Eufemia.

http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.it/v/Archivio+di+Stato+di+Pescara/Stato+civile+napoleonico/Caramanico/

1816-1843

The Restoration Era - Napoleon was kicked out of Italy but Italy was still a group of small regions with no central government. During 1816-1843, record keeping continued and Villa Sant'Eufemia records were still kept in Caramanico

http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.it/v/Archivio+di+Stato+di+Pescara/Stato+civile+della+restaurazione/Caramanico/

1844-1860

The Restoration Era - Record keeping continued but in 1844, Sant'Eufemia became a separate town.

http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.it/v/Archivio+di+Stato+di+Pescara/Stato+civile+della+restaurazione/SantEufemia/

1860-1920

The Reunification Era - the country of Italy came into being with the reunification. Record keeping continued.
The records from 1860-1865 are listed under the town name "Sant'Eufemia" while the records from 1866-1920 are listed under the town name "Sant'Eufemia a Maiella".

http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.it/v/Archivio+di+Stato+di+Pescara/Stato+civile+italiano/SantEufemia/
http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.it/v/Archivio+di+Stato+di+Pescara/Stato+civile+italiano/SantEufemia+a+Maiella/

These birth/marriage/death records are not complete (in particular, missing almost all of the records from the 1870's). Maybe those missing years will be added in the future or else the records have been lost.

The Battery Conservancy is preparing to launch CastleGarden.org on August  1, 2005 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the opening of the  immigrant depot at Castle Garden on August 1, 1855.

From the site "Castle Clinton was built in anticipation of the War of 1812. A decade later it was renamed Castle Garden and was transformed into the City's premier cultural center. By 1855, successive landfills had enlarged the Park to encompass Castle Garden and the structure became America's first immigrant receiving center, welcoming 8.5 million people before it was succeeded by Ellis Island."

The following quote is from http://stevemorse.org/ellis/faqc.htm

"101. Is this the Castle Garden ship records or is it the New York Passenger Arrivals list?

That's one and the same thing depending on the years involved.  This database covers the New York passenger arrivals from 1851 to 1891.  Between the years of 1855 and 1890 all passengers arriving in New York were processed at Castle Garden.  Prior to 1855 passengers were not processed -- they simply walked off the ship.  During 1890 and 1891 they were processed at the Barge Office and after that at Ellis Island.  So although the large majority of the records in this database are for passengers processed at Castle Garden, there are some additional records as well."

The LDS church had microfilmed many civil records from Italy. They have always been available at the Family History Centers around the county. Now familysearch.org is starting to make those microfilms available on-line. In Feb of 2012, Wilberta DiVencenzo told me of the first set that we might be interested in. These are birth/marriage/death/misc records from the town of Castel di Sangro which is nearby to San Pietro Avellana. There was a lot intermarrying between these towns and these records no doubt contain the names of many people born in SPA or who lived in SPA after marriage. You have register for this site, but its free. https://familysearch.org/pal:/

World War I: Online Database of the Italian victims

Do you have ancestors or distant relatives who died during WWI ? There is someone missing in your genealogy tree who died between 1915 and 1918? It’s long time ago but a lot of Italians lost their lives during the First World War.

Maybe our grandparents told us about a brother or an uncle who never came back to the village from the war.

Now it’s possible to search online the big database of Italians who died during the war: there are more than 600,000.

In history books we can easily read the name of the generals of the Italian army but we will never know the names of the soldiers. On the internet site http://www.cadutigrandeguerra.it you can search for people by entering a surname (or a part of it).

This is a useful tool to know more about our Italian families. And it’s a good way to remember forever the names of people who gave their lives to our Italian homeland.

My Uncle Michael  & Aunt Lucy Morelli are half owner's of Ligori's in Ogden  The cook Ligori is the other half owner. It is a small pizza & Pasta place (near the May Kay Dee Hospital). The address is 4421 Harrison Blvd. They seldom visit there.

My Uncle Michael  & Aunt Lucy Morelli are full owner's of Ligori's in Layton (approx. 5 mile south) It is a big restaurant (near Hillfield Military Base). 2798 N. 400  W. Hillfield Ave. If you were interested in meeting them, they prefer to visit there sometimes, however they are seldom there themselves. They have a manager that runs the place.

"Local activists from the Pro-Yo Party and the ITAM (Post 12) are working to make Brier Hill a Sister-City/"Cugin" Community of San Pietro Avellana (Isernia). San Pietro is a small village in the Apennine hills of Southeastern Italy that is the ancestral home of many Italian Americans in the Youngstown area." From Ben Laricca:

I wanted to know why my maternal grandfather, Giangregorio Mendozzi, left the sheep herding trade and his country for Youngstown, Ohio.  My research ended up as a bilingual article published on the website www.amicidicapracotta. Though Grandpa was from Capracotta, my study applies to any of the mountain villages in Abruzzo and Molise where the "transumanza," long distance sheep herding, was an important trade.

Act 110 – Public Records

On December 15, 2011, Governor Tom Corbett approved Senate Bill 361. This bill amends the Act of June 29, 1953 (P.L. 304, No. 66), known as the Vital Statistics Law of 1953, to provide for public access to certain birth and death certificates after a fixed amount of time has passed. This legislation provides that such documents become public records 105 years after the date of birth or 50 years after the date of death.

From Wilberta Illig:
"There are a lot of St. Mary's Cemeteries in the Pittsburgh area, but "St. Mary's (R.C.) Cemetery, Lawrenceville, PA" is where the Italians in Bloomfield area buried their family members in the early years.  When the cemetery started getting  full, the Italians then went to Calvary Cemetery in  Hazelwood.  There is a search box on the first webpage to search whole site by surname. You'll find many SPA surnames there. Some of my Mariani's are buried in St. Mary's."

Diocese of  Pittsburgh ARCHIVES AND RECORDS CENTER

From Ken Unico:
The Diocese of Pgh (which encompasses Allegheny County and many of the surrounding counties) has centralized all of their parish records. While these records are not available to the public, the diocese archivists will perform any research you desire for a very  reasonable fee. I have used them in the past, and they are extremely knowledgeable and know exactly where to look for records (for example. they would know which churches in the Diocese were frequented by Italians.)

Carnegie Library

Another valuable resource  can be found at the Pennsylvania Room of  the Carnegie Library in Oakland.  Many of the Allegheny County Courthouse records have been microfilmed and moved there. On top of this, library has been indexing the obituary records for as long as I can remember. However, most of the information at the library cannot be accessed on-line.   You have to go to the library

Beaver County, PA Newspapers

Google has scans of the main newspaper from the Beaver County, PA area. Called the Beaver Valley Times and then the Beaver County Times, Google has scans from 1950 up to about 2005. Wilberta told me about an earlier newspaper, the Daily Times which cover the 1930's and 1940's (also includes the yet earlier "Beaver Times".

Since many Italians ended up in Beaver County (including of course, both of my parents), I thought I would let everyone know about the scans.

To access the scans, go to Google News Archive Search at:
http://news.google.com/archivesearch?q=&btnG=Search+Archives&ned=us&hl=en&scoring=a

Type in a search word (or words) and the SOURCE newspaper like this:

frazzini source:"Daily Times"
